Get ready to roll out those campers, Massachusetts’ Massasoit State Park is back in business. It’s been 10 years since the park’s campground facilities have been operational and open to the public. A lightning strike and power surge in 2008 knocked out the state park’s underground electrical system.
The park’s overseer, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, on Wednesday announced the campground and its 94 campsites will reopen to the public Friday, Aug. 24.
A DCR statement said the agency spent $5 million restoring the campground and making other improvements to the 1,200-acre state park, located in East Taunton at 1361 Middleboro Ave.
In celebration of the opening, camping will be free next weekend, Friday the 24th through Sunday, Aug. 26. There is, however, an $8.65 transaction fee to process a reservation through the Reserve America online service. DCR says reservations are not required for camping but you can’t be guaranteed a spot.
Regular camping fees for Massasoit State Park are $17 for in-state residents and $27 for out-of-state residents.
