Traveling With a Full Fresh Water Tank

Few people will argue the more weight you carry the the worse your fuel milage will be. However some RVers say they can’t see any difference in fuel milage with a full or empty tank.

For Fran and I, the way we travel, it doesn’t make much sense to have a full fresh water tank. Our travel days are usually less that 6 hours and we almost always spend the night in an RV park with hookups. I try to keep a few gallons in the tank so we can use the toilet or if we stop for lunch we can wash up.

Even when a campground doesn’t have water at the campsite there is usually water available and it’s easy enough the fill the tank when arriving at the campground before setting up.

If I know we will be spending the night somewhere that doesn’t have water I will fill the fresh water tank, or at least add more than usual, before we head out.

Of course, if we were going to traveling the loneliest road in America out across the desert I would probably fill the water tank.

At about 8 pounds per gallon a full 45 gallon fresh water tank will weigh in at around 360 pounds. Whether or not that additional weight of a full fresh water tank makes a difference to you depends on the carrying capacity of your rig and how close you are to the maximum as well as how big your engine is. And how you feel about ‘always being prepared’.
