RV Quick Tips

This TIP from a neighbourhood watch is good advice for homeowners with car alarms but also makes a lot of sense for RVers overnighting in shopping center parking lots, etc.

Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear activity outside or someone is trying to get into your RV or vehicle, just press the panic button for your tow vehicle or ‘toad’. The alarm will sound, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

When overnighting in campgrounds that charge extra for full hook-ups, opt for a basic site. Instead of paying extra for a sewer connection use the dump station when you arrive or when leaving in the morning. Opting for a water/electric only site may save you $5 or more per night.

Many boxed foods like cold cereals, pancake mix, crackers and cookies have an inner bag. You can make more space in the pantry by removing the inner bag and throwing the box away. We actually buy cold cereal in bags. As the products are consumed they make room for new supplies because the box isn’t taking up space. Boxed foods without a an inner bag can be transfered to a zip-lock bag.

Paper shop towels make great around-the-house cleaning rags. The blue ones are usually available at auto parts stores but we have purchased extra large rolls… in a plastic bucket or cardboard box… of white towels at Sam’s Club. We keep a roll in the truck and another in the fifth wheel. One large roll lasts several weeks.

RV ovens tend to heat unevenly and usually burn the bottom of biscuits, cookies and other baked goods. To solve this, use a pizza stone under the pan. It distributes heat more evenly.
