Keep it Going Down the Drain

A Tip from Fran Crawford- One of the things I miss most … no, let me rephrase that …the one thing I miss most living in an RV instead of a stick house is a garbage disposal. A garbage disposer is a great way to clean up a kitchen after meals.

A garbage disposer works best when cold water is running. The cold water solidifies any grease, oil, etc. so the disposer can pulverize it into minute particles that are flushed down into the sewer lines.

But in RVs, kitchen sinks drain into a holding tank before exiting the rig.

The gray water holding tank, may be left open if you are hooked to a sewage pipe where you are staying, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to be aware of what you are putting down the drain into the tank.

When caution is not used grease and oil can solidify and clog up the pipes and gray tank of your RV.

Here are some suggestions for disposing of material you don’t want to go down your drain:

• Use paper towel to wipe out greasy pots and skillets before washing them.
• Pour excess cooking oil into a sealable container and put it in the trash.
• Trimmed fat and leftover greasy foods can be put into ziptop bags and also put in the trash.
• Grease cutting dish detergent in your dishpan will reduce grease and oil in holding tanks and help rinse away build up.
